Valcent Products Inc. Combines Innovation and Agriculture

"[Valcent] at the forefront of an agriculture revolution" - Philadelphia MetroNews

It is one of the greatest problems facing the world in the next few years - food.

The world population is growing, available farmland is not, soil quality is deteriorating, and water supplies are falling.

The chart below from the World Health Organization shows the arable land and water per capita has been in steady declined. And theyre heading even lower.

Legendary investor Jim Rogers recently summed up the situation perfectly:

"The challenge is that people are eating more foods these days. But the supply of food products is coming down.

"Food supply is going to remain down since we have serious production problems. At the same time people are eating more and we are burning some of our foods as fuels."

Its unsustainable. And with the world adding 80 million people per year, it cannot last.

But as with all problems the world is facing, there are innovative solutions.

One of those innovators that has a potential solution is Valcent Products Inc. (OTCBB:VCTZF). This company has developed a unique method it calls VertiCropTM for growing food. It uses less water, less space, requires no farmland, and has far less impact than traditional farming.

Time magazine identified VertiCropTM as one of the "Top 50 Innovations of 2009." It recently earned the backing of leading environmentalist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. It has been proven commercially viable. And thanks to a recent deal with a China-based agriculture company, it is about to move into the largest market in the world.

VertiCropTM: 21st Century Hanging Gardens

Valcents key product is VertiCropTM. The system is based on whats called vertical farming.

The picture below features the VertiCropTM system in use in the United Kingdom:

The VertiCropTM system has many advantages over field agriculture.

The first big advantage is that it maximizes space. The picture above shows how production is stacked vertically. This allows VertiCropTM to grow up to 20 times as much as regular field agriculture without taking anymore space. It grows up, not out.

Another big advantage is water consumption. Since the system is completely controlled for optimal production, the VertiCropTM system uses as little as 5% of the water required to produce the same amount of crop of a traditional farm. The system maximizes water use by providing the right amount and reusing any water the plants dont take up.

There are other advantages. The VertiCropTM system can be installed and used successfully almost anywhere in the world. It doesnt need an optimal climate because the system is climate-controlled. There is no need for pesticides and herbicides. Its scalable too. Whether a project is big or small, VertiCropTM can be tailored to any size.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, it can be more economical than field agriculture. As mentioned above, it uses less space and water. And the VertiCropTM system reduces transportation expenses because it can be built very close to end consumers in suburban and urban areas.

VertiCropTM is versatile, economical, and has numerous advantages over traditional land agriculture. But making an innovation successful takes a lot more than simply building a better mousetrap, it needs to be proven and earn broad acceptance and support. VertiCropTM is quickly achieving both of these.

Leaping into the Mainstream

VertiCropTM has been generating a lot of excitement in the agriculture world. It has been featured numerous times in the mainstream media. It has earned Time magazines Top 50 innovations in 2009. It has been featured by CNN Money, Reuters, CBS Radio, Conversation Magazine, and World Metro News. It has also been selected as one of the 10 Best Companies for a Sustainable Future by a coalition backed by NASA, USAID, the U.S. State Department and Nike.

It has been proven successful on a commercial scale. The VertiCropTM system has been in use at the United Kingdoms Paignton Zoo for almost a year. According to the Paignton Zoos manager, "The unique system is the first of its kind in the has enabled the Zoo to make substantial savings on their annual food bills, but also enhance the lives of the Zoo animals by providing them with nutritious fresh fodder grown on site on a year round basis."

So it works and it has been well-publicized, now it just needs to make it into the mainstream agriculture community. Thats where a recent addition to Valcents advisory board can play a big role.

Earlier this year, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a member of the well-connected Kennedy family, joined the Valcent advisory board. And he has already started spreading the word about VertiCropTM.

At the 78th Winter Meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Kennedy extolled the benefits of the VertiCropTM system. At the conference attended by First Lady Michelle Obama, Energy Secretary Stephen Chu, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and dozens of leading politicians, Kennedy said, "Substitution of this technology for conventional food production can revitalize agricultural land damaged by traditional farming, rejuvenate abandoned city properties, and help combat health problems such as Type II diabetes and obesity that result, in part, from lack of quality produce in our diets."

Valcents President, Chris Bradford, summed up the impact of the presentation when he said, "This is the right message to the right people at the right time. We are proud that the VertiCropTM System is at the forefront of the vertical farming revolution. We can grow fresh produce within easy reach of the urban consumer, on land where natural water sources have been exhausted, and even in hostile environments where conventional farming systems cannot be sustained.

Breaking into the China Market

In addition, Valcent has recently made entry into one of the largest prospective markets for VertiCropTM.

On June 16, 2010, Valcent announced it has taken a major step into China, the largest and potentially most lucrative market for the VertiCropTM system. Valcent has reached a deal with Hong Kong-based VF Innovations.

This, to put it simply, is a big move for Valcent.

VF Innovations estimates Hong Kong produces 44 tons of vegetables per day. It, however, imports more than 1,600 tons of vegetables per day. The seven million residents of Hong Kong rely almost entirely on imports which cost them a lot of money and can strain the local transportation system.

VF Innovations sees opportunity here and plans to use VertiCropTM technology to produce as much as 10 tons of vegetables per day.

Growing the Green

VertiCropTM has come a long way over the past few years. It has gone from unique idea to commercial-scale proven success. But to take VertiCropTM and Valcent to the next level, its going to take a team of managers experienced in agriculture, sales, and growing companies.

Valcent has assembled such a team with the experience:

Robert F. Kennedy Junior - Advisor to the Board - as a member of the Kennedy Family, he has used his high-profile status to attract attention to numerous charitable and environmental initiatives. He has been named one of Time magazines "Heroes for the Planet" and his web site describes him as "resolute defender of the environment." His skills and experience will be a valuable asset to Valcent.

Naveen Aggarwal - Director -is currently engaged as an associate with Sweetwater Capital, responsible for the evaluation of opportunities and the subsequent provision of advisory support to ensure success. Naveen is also a principal of Interactive Technologies Fund, based in Toronto, Ontario. He also serves on the Board of Directors of FourSpots Inc. and Infolinx Communications Ltd. and is a former director of Verrus Mobile Technologies Inc. Since 1975, he has been a financial advisor to Sweetwater Capital, Britton Capital Corporation and West Peak Ventures of Canada Ltd. Previous and current engagements include Zoom Telephonic (NASD:Zoom); Synenco Energy; War Eagle Mining Company (WAR CDN TSX exchange); Oilsands Quest (BQI - AMEX) formerly Canwest Petroleum Corporation; and Valcent Products Inc.

The Bottom Line

Again, the world is facing a big problem. Almost everyone from the World Health Organization to Jim Rogers have identified the global food situation as a perilous one.

But big problems create big opportunities. Valcent Products Inc. (OTCBB:VCTZF) VertiCropTM system is aimed squarely at capitalizing on the opportunity by providing a solution that is more efficient, more effective, and very adaptable.

It has also earned the backing of some of the worlds best-connected politicians and successful entrepreneurs.

On top of all that, Valcent is poised for a very bright future in the near-term. In addition to its key deal with VF Innovations in Hong Kong the company is on pace to be cash-flow positive by the end of the year.

VertiCropTM has already proven it works in the United Kingdom. And as it grows, VertiCropTM systems will become more and more in demand. Valcent is facing a big opportunity and its making the moves necessary to capitalize on it.
